Beginner: Skin & Shading in General

These tutorials are for beginners. They are very basic and thorough, however, a basic knowledge of Photoshop is required. As far as I know, all the tools featured are availiable in Paint.net and GIMP.

There are 3 different skin tutorials, each with different skintones. I've included swatches at the end of each tutorial and detailed instructions on how to do them. These skills can be applied on dresses, makeup, objects, pretty much anything. I'll be posting a poll soon on the sidebar to vote for the next tutorial, so keep checking back!

Also, with these tutes, I expect you all to read each of them to find your favorite one. If everyone used the same technique, it'd be very very boring and Stardoll graphics would lose their diversity they have at the moment. Don't use my instructions as a set desicion, play around with the rules and find your own style, and soon you'll be Stardoll's next top graphic designer ;)

PS: All comments are well-received, I really want to know what you guys are thinking, how you're all doing (please send in pictures!) and what you want to know about next. If you need further instructions, ask! I don't bite ;)

Click on each swatch to take you to a tutorial, or just click on the page called "The Basics" at the top :)

  5. Hm... Did you use the burn tool? Because as I said, never ever use the burn tool.
You want to start using the polyogonal lasso tool, or if you have a wacom, the basic freeform lasso tool to give you a crisper, sharper edge. I'll also be talking about proportions soon, but by the looks of things, you'll progress into a pretty decent graphic artist with some practice :)

  6. How come we shouldn't use the burn tool?

  7. It looks horrible. The fleshy colour of the skin turns orange, it's very innaccurate and looks cheap. I'll do an example on skin sometime to show the difference :)

  8. But can't you turn the burn tool to the setting of highlight or shadow (I forget which one)

    ReplyDelete
  9. It still looks awful
Setting it to highlight and shadow just adjusts the intensity.
it's like burning paper. When you draw something on paper, it has a graduated tone, getting gradually darker. If you burn a piece of paper, you'll have white, then suddenly brown, then suddenly black and then a bit more white. It just looks wrong.
I'll post an example later if I get time :)

  11. Conii, that's a perfect graphic, just watch the shape and colour of nail polish - it has shading too! If you were to shade the nails, create some shine by using small dots of pure white in places around the light source. Is it ok if I feature your graphic in the blog?

  22. Lol,I'm already an addict.
I tried the shading technique on the hair, and a little bit on the face and make-up.

It's kinda fastly made, and just for fun, but what do you think?

  23. Your hand is PERFECT! You could even use more blurring if you prefer, what's right for you is right for everyone else :)
The hair is very impressive - is this your first time?
I'll be doing hair in more detail soon so you'll definately progress quickly :)
